Katie by Michael McDowell, which is also on the long list for book of the year. She's a fabulously unrepentant killer of all things wealthy, fluffy, or just plain in her way. So major warnings for senseless violence and dog abuse, but still a truly awesome story by a brilliant writer whose career was cut short far too soon.

I think I'm going to join the majority and rant about you, LJ. What's up with this dicking around with people for no reason? Everything was pretty reasonable the way it was. We had comment subject lines, which were great for comment fics and in-jokes, both of which are hugely important to the majority of your users. Apparently you think "obsessed with fanfic" is a childish phase that we pass through and look back on with a certain fond embarrassment, but for some of us, the structured creativity is a real aid to our work. For others, it is the work itself. How dare you be so condescending to your PAID users?

And the nonsense with the thumbnail pics on comments? What's the point of that? I happen to have PAID for 260 icon spaces, 205 of which are currently filled. Do you have any idea what a pain it is to wait for all those to load when I know which one I want? Look, I get that you have to keep changing things, keep it looking phresh and new (because you've no doubt observed how FB keeps doing that, and their users love it, right?), but how about you stop trying to revolutionize a perfectly good system and try a devolution instead. (Need to look that up? It's okay. I'll wait.) Go ahead and make it look different, but don't actually fuck anything up. It's probably not that hard to change the appearance of the comment field without taking away the features we've all come to depend on.

But most of all, when you're making these changes and fucking things up, please, please, please don't tell us it's better this way, that we don't know what we want, that it's an exciting new improvement, and then ask us to vote you the best in anything. Because right now the only thing I'd vote LJ for is greatest capacity to suck donkey. I mean, at least when FaceBook fucks us around, they do it for free.

I'm actually hoping for a set of coasters with some sort of cute kitten on them. My current coasters were a passive/aggressive gift from a friend who didn't really like me that much anymore. They're a Hello Kitty parody called Goodbye Kitty, and each features a different "comical" death for an otherwise not un-cute kitty. There's Goodbye Kitty in a front load washing machine, in a blender (not yet blended, thank god), in a toaster, and in a toilet bowl (I actually can't find that one). They're better than nothing, furniture-wise, but they make me sad.

My father in law, the oft-mentioned arch-nemesis. He takes me things and puts them out of reach (hello, wheelchair) and says I have to ask him if I want them back. This covers everything he can get his hands on, from socks to books to crackers and plates. He goes through the papers on my desk and interrogates me constantly on our finances and legal business, none of which he can understand. He has a computer, but makes me do his Googling and printing, and everything else he needs, like I'm his secretary. If I'm busy/sick/don't know how, he yells about how much money he's given my husband over the years and how much we owe him.

He breaks my picture frames and vases and laughs about it. If we don't start mowing the lawn in February, he calls me white trash and says we're single-handedly driving down the property values for everyone on our street. According to him, I'm personally responsible for the collapse of the entire housing market. When strangers throw garbage on our lawn, he says it's because they know what kind of people we are--white trash who won't care or even bother to clean it up.

And he kicks my dogs. And sometimes, when I'm not around, he shaves them because he can't comprehend that brushing is the answer to shedding.

And there's no point in arguing with any of it because he's 85 and can't hear much, so he just ignores it and laughs until I cry.

Probably, if Herr could go with me. Space is his big dream. I just want to go someplace with lower gravity so I can stand up and bounce around. Actually, living on the space station would be cooler. Except for the no shuttle service thing.

Eleanor Rigby. It's the first Beatles song that I remember hearing and feeling that instant attraction to. I was maybe five or six and it came on the radio while I was playing. I had to put down my toys and just listen. And I spent years listening to that lousy AM station, just hoping to hear it again. It's a perfect song in every way, lyrically, musically, and emotionally, capable of evoking whatever I need to feel on any given day.

Just going in the shelves by my desk, they'd be forced to conclude that I speak German and Spanish, like zombies and gay porn, and have a greater interest in the 18th century British Navy than I can legitimately claim. (Frankly, my German and Spanish suck, too.:)

I dream of doors. Usually in the house I grew up in. It used to be that the exterior doors didn't latch properly and there was something outside that wanted to get in. I kept slamming the doors but the latches wouldn't catch, they just kept popping open. After I told my Herr about it and he explained what it meant, based on things that very few people know about me, the dreams changed. There are still monsters out there, but now I can latch the doors. Sometimes they even lock. I keep hoping it will stop altogether one day, but for now, just being able to close them in enough.

Well, it can't surprise anyone that my favorite is Riptide's Murray Bozinsky, who has done so much for me over the years. Starting with inspiring hope in my eight year old heart that uncoordinated bookworms could be loved, too. Not to mention indelibly imprinting appreciation for logic minded computer nerds, who have turned out to be some of the finest people I know.

And, more recently, he brought me here, to the fandom where I met my one true [livejournal.com profile] catyah and many other lovely, like-minded writers. I try to express my Murray-love in positive ways, writing stories that I think have helped me grow and improve in both style and confidence, which has overflowed into my non-fandom life. I've written more in the last year than in any given five year period, and it's been way more fun.

And yes, I collect memorabilia. I have a couple of photos, a die cast Screaming Mimi and a few magazines with interviews, although Murray/Thom Bray rarely figures much into those. Even now, there's little love for the geeks. (I also bought the 1985 sticker collection on eBay, but it hasn't come yet.) My big dream now is to get the German DVDs, which I understand have scenes that were deleted from the US releases.

Logic. I know it's taught in some schools, and is part of the point of debating societies, but it's not widespread enough. In fact, high school is too late. It needs to start in the first grade and continue through high school, becoming more sophisticated as the students grow. In my school we were taught blind, unthinking obedience to all perceived authority figures from day one, and that's where all the intolerance and idiocy comes from. Not that people aren't thinking for themselves, but that they aren't taught how to think and question properly.

My most embarrassing favorite song has to be Chiquitita by ABBA. I never play it for anyone because they just hear the disco and pay no attention to the words, but it's really beautiful. Google the lyrics and you'll see.

You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end, you will have no time for grieving.

Gone With the Wind!  I've read it more often than any other book I own, and every time it becomes more important.  Forget the movie, the war and the slaves, that's not the point.  It's Rhett's keen perceptions on human nature, and Melanie's example of the right way to live, that make it so profound and unique.  Biographies of the author lend some real insight into her process and intent, and she made some surprising statements in interviews about her opinion of how it was being interpreted.

(On the other hand, avoid the sequel at all costs.  I would pay good money to have my memories of it erased.  Also, The Wind Done Gone, which reads like bad fanfic from a bitter ex-fan.)

I've always been a cat person.  Small, cuddly, quiet, cute--all the things I want in a roommate.  (Although Mr. Sloane did scratch the soft underside of my finger pretty badly during a late-night battle for blankets.)  But dogs are also good, for different reasons.  Home protection, walking around the neighborhood, being excited about riding in cars--all things I need.  So I have equal numbers of each, and get on fine with anyone who doesn't try to generalize that one is better than the other in every way.
